outside of a privy

Privies, also known as vault toilets/latrines/outhouses are a wonderful thing about shelters. Most of them have privies, although TN does not have them at all shelters. The quality of privies varies greatly among them however. I have encountered 1 open air privy (this is much like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness) but most have had at least 3 walls and if you’re lucky, a door. Some are roomy and others you hit your knees on the door when you sit down. Most are dark, without windows, but one had skylights. This means you don’t need your headlamp during the day to use it.

In VA a lot of them have little mailboxes in them. They are to keep your toilet paper from getting chewed up by the mice. However, I am pretty sure I heard a mouse in one mailbox. I did not open it to find out. One privy even had lysol disinfectant in it! Nice. I have encountered lots of spiders and apparently there was a snake living in one. I did not see it though. Some privies are mouldering and after you do your business you put a handful of leaves and duff(topsoil) in the toilet. Privies are a wonderful sight when you need to use the restroom. It sure beats digging a hole!
