Lakes of the Clouds
Lakes of the Clouds Hut is 1.5 miles before Mount Washington. This is the largest hut with capacity for nearly 100 guests. Because it is close to Washington a lot of thru-hikers will stop in here to check the weather and possibly do a work for stay there. There were 9 of us there as weather was starting to role in. 5 of us got there at 3:45pm and when we inquired about work for stay they said no because we were too early and they knew there would be more that would show up. They couldn’t in good conscience tell us to go to the next hut (7 miles away) because weather was coming in on Mt. Washington. But, they did tell us we could have the dungeon which sleeps 6 for $10 plus $5 for supper and $5 for breakfast leftovers. We knew we couldn’t go any further, so we decided that was our best deal.
We got to the dungeon and it smelled like oil and was pretty cramped. It is used as an emergency shelter in the winter. We were the only 4 in there, so we took the top 4 bunks. The meal leftovers were not that exciting and it seemed that the staff of the hut were not very friendly. There were 5 people that did work for stay and we ate the same as they did. I tell you, those meals were not worth 5 dollars. Cold oatmeal is not appetizing when you know it was hot at one time. The burnt pancakes were also not my favorite. But free food is good, so I did eat. I thought about trying to get my money back and eat my own food, but I didn’t. It just seems like the AMC Huts could do better for the thru-hikers. I realize we don’t make them any money, but we’re just trying to do the trail. It’s not like we can skip that part. It does depend on the hut staff as to how you will be treated. We just weren’t that impressed with this one.
